Method of tilling, which is performed by means of a rotary cultivator, which is drawn behind a drawing appliance, such as a vehicle, a machine or the like, the rotary cultivator having cultivating members 1, which are situated essentially transversely to the direction of travel s and which by means of a power element 2 are made to rotate about their longitudinal axes with a speed of rotation w, which is substantially greater than the drawing speed v, in order to produce the so-called active operation of the rotary cultivator. In order particularly to improve the efficiency of the tilling, the turf that has been tilled is conveyed by the cultivating members 1, at least at one edge of the cultivator, in a direction that deviates substantially from the opposite direction to the direction of travel s, in order to cast the turf into an area corresponding substantially to the overall width L of the rotary cultivator. The object of the invention is also a rotary cultivator, which functions according to the method. <IMAGE>
