The unit has a tubular housing (1) containing a catalytically-active monolithic mass (3) supported by a mat (2). Inlet and outlet cones (10,20) with through passages (21), their ends (22) towards the housing being beaded over outwards and welded to it to form sealed joints. The outlet cone contains a funnel-section (23) of steep angle (Alpha). Between the monolith end face and the funnel-section is a cylindrical one (25), whose length (D) increases with the steepness of the funnel-cone angle. The funnel-section joins via a wide radiused portion (R) onto the outlet passage, the radius increasing with the cone angle steepness. The inlet cone is longer than the outlet one. The cone angle can be between 50 and 90 degrees, and the cylindrical section can be at least 8 mm long. |
