FIELD: detergents. SUBSTANCE: improved detergent compositions are provided containing one or more anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, or their mixtures, and also scouring enzymes. Improvement consists in adding enzyme-enhancing amounts of fatty acid polyhydroxyamides with general formula R<SB>2</SB>-CO-NR<SB>1</SB>-Z where R<SB>1</SB> is C<SB>1</SB>-C<SB>4</SB>- hydrocarbyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-hydroxypropyl, or their mixture; R<SB>2</SB> is C<SB>5</SB>-C<SB>31</SB>- hydrocarbyl; and z straight-chain polyhydroxyhydrocarbyl with at least 3 OH groups directly linked to hydrocarbyl chain or its alkoxylated derivative.
