A one-part cyanoacrylate adhesive composition including a cyanoacrylate monomer and at least one salt of a cation which is a hard Lewis acid with an anion of low nucleophilicity. The cation is suitably a metal cation optionally selected from: Li<+>, Na<+>, K<+>, Be<2+>, Mg<2+>, Ca<2+>, Cr<3+>, Al<3+>, Fe<2+>, Co<2+>, Ni<2+>, Cu<2+>, Zn<2+> or Pb<2+>. The anion may be selected from BF<->4, PF<->6, SbF<->6, SbC1<->4, AsF<->6, SbCl<->6, SnCl<->6, FeCl<->4, CF<->3SO3 or C1O<->4. The salt may be present in an amount from 0.001 % to 6 % by weight of the composition or the monomer.
