The present invention relates to a sustained-release preparation comprising polylactide coglycolide (PLG) microspheres which comprise erythropoietin (EPO); said microspheres having a size distribution which is bimodal, having an upper peak and a lower peak in particle size; and to pharmaceutical compositions comprising such preparations. It also relates to a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion process for producing a sustained-release preparation of the invention.
