The method involves setting a charge time of a fast charge operating mode for each type of battery. It is checked whether a NiMH or a NiCd battery is currently in a charge device. The fast charge mode or a maintaining charge mode is carried out for a predetermined period of time in response to the temperature state and the charge voltage state of the battery when the battery is an NiMH battery. When the battery is determined to be an NiCd battery the fast charge or charge maintenance mode is carried out for a predetermined time period in response to the charge voltage condition of the battery.
