<p>The present invention provides an annular sealing apparatus (10) for disposition in cooperation with a body defining a bore (12) and a rotating member (15) rotatably received in said bore (12) to inhibit fluid leakage therebetween. The sealing apparatus (10) is comprised of axially juxtaposed first and second (20) comb-like pluralities of uniformly spaced and integral finger members (36) circumscribing the rotating member (15). Each finger member (36) has substantially the same width and is separated from adjacent finger members by a uniform gap (38). At the innermost end of each finger (36) is a foot portion (44) sealingly and movably engaging said rotating member (15). Each foot portion (44) is configured so as to lift away from the rotating member (15) and ride on a thin film of air during engine operation. The first and second comb-like members (20) are positioned so that the fingers of each block the gaps (38) in the other.</p> |
