<p>A press-on cap (1) having a flat top (2) with a cylindrical skirt (4) having an annular tear band (20) defined by a pair of annular score lines (10, 12), and having at least two annular inner beads (17, 18) which seat in annular grooves in a bottle neck. The skirt forms a tamper-proof ring below the tear band and is bonded to the bottle neck by laser radiation in at least one spot. The spot bonds preferably have a diameter no greater than about 0.15 inch. The invention also comprises a bottle filler line having a capping station in which caps are applied over the narrow necks of filled bottles and a cap bonding station in which the bottles are passed between laser beam effectors which are pulsed momentarily to spot bond the tamper-proof rings of the caps to the necks of the bottles.</p> |
