The wire (W) is fed into a preparation head which has a guide (46) through which the wire is threaded and an outlet which rotates while gripping the wire. Servo-driven grips (60) clamp the wire while the fitting rotates. The twisted wire is formed by forming grips which wind it around a former to form the coil spring. A servo-drive controls feed rollers which insert the wire into the head. A second servo drive rotates the head while a third servo drive operates the wire clamps. The whole process is controlled by a processor using a programmed selected to match the particular coil spring being wound.
