A surgical instrument for manually manipulating suture needles is formed of two elongate members (31,32) hinged together, on one side of the hinge (33) the elongate members (31,32) forming a pair of jaws (34,35) which are relatively moveable, on the other end of the elongate members (31,32) handles (36,37) being formed which allow the user to manipulate the jaws about the hinge (33), an arcuate shield (10) being integrally formed with one of the jaws (34) to extend laterally and arcuately from said one jaw (34) to cover the opposing jaw (35). The placement of the shield (40) is such that a needle (42) which is held between the jaws (34,35) is protected from sticking in any one or anything, while the shield (40) may be made up of several units (44 to 48) forming an angled structure. <IMAGE> |
