A projection liquid crystal display apparatus has a light source (11) for emitting white light and a liquid crystal display unit (15), between which a holographic optical element (14) serving as the colour separating/focusing means is disposed. The holographic optical element separates the white light into red, green and blue components and directs these primary colour components to pixels of the corresponding colours in the liquid crystal display, whereby the image to be reproduced is formed. The holographic optical element may be produced by using the liquid crystal display unit as an exposure mask and selectively rendering transmissive its pixels of one colour while applying this colour light through the display unit. Simultaneously, a reference light is applied so as to form interference fringes. The operation is repeated for the other colours. Alternatively, a colour filter having an appropriate arrangement of pixels and colours may be used as the exposure mask. The interference fringes may be formed so as to deviate complementary colour light components away from the liquid crystal display unit. <IMAGE> |
