This invention concerns a process for modifying, decomposing or bleaching lignin, lignin-containing materials or similar substances containing a) optionally at least one oxidation catalyst and b) at least one suitable oxidizing agent and c) at least one mediator, characterized by the fact that the mediator is chosen from the group of vicinal nitroso-substituted aromatic alcohols of general formulas (Ia) or (Ib), as well as their salts, ethers, or esters, wherein R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are the same or different and mean a hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, formyl, carbamoyl, carboxy rest, an ester or salt of the carboxy rest, a sulfono rest, an ester or salt of the sulfono rest, a sulfamoyl, nitro, nitroso, cyano, amino, phenyl, aryl-C1-C5-alkyl, C1-C12-alkyl, C1-C5-alkoxy, C1-C10-carbonyl, carbonyl-C1-C6-alkyl, phospho, phosphono, phosphono-oxy rest, an ester or salt of the phosphono-oxy rest, wherein carbamoyl, sulfamoyl, amino, and phenyl rests can be unsubstituted or mono- or multi-substituted with a rest R<5>, and the aryl-C1-C5-alkyl, C1-C12-alkyl, C1-C5-alkoxy, C1-C10-carbonyl, carbonyl-C1-C6-alkyl rests can be saturated or unsaturated, branched or unbranched and mono- or multi-substituted with a rest R<5>, wherein R<5> is the same or different and means a hydroxy, formyl, carboxy rest, ester or salt of the carboxy rest, a carbamoyl, sulfono, sulfamoyl, nitro, nitroso, amino, phenyl, C1-C5-alkyl, C1-C5-alkoxy rest, or the R<1>-R<4> rests are combined pair-wise into a ring [-CR<6>R<7>-]m, wherein m is a whole number and means a value from 1 to 4, or into a ring [-CR<8>=CR<9>-]n, wherein n is a whole number and means a value from 1 to 3, and R<6>, R<7>, R<8> and R<9> are the same or different and have the meanings cited for R<1>-R<4>. |
