PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a honeycomb body from becoming damaged by vibration or thermal stress at the time of starting or stopping an internal combustion engine and also preventing the honeycomb body from becoming deviated in the axial direction to improve durability at a low cost, in a catalytic converter for the purification of an exhaust gas from a variety of internal combustion engines such as an automotive engine and an exhaust gas purifying device equipped with the catalytic converter. SOLUTION: This catalytic converter has a ring-like retaining member 2 fitted to one of the ends or to both ends, in the axial direction, of a metal honeycomb body 1 consisting of catalysts carried on the surfaces of plural air holes formed in the axial direction, and a nonexpanding fiber mat 3 wound around the peripheral face of the honeycomb body 1. In addition, the exhaust gas purifying device consists of the catalytic converter introduced into an exhaust gas pipe for an internal combustion engine or installed halfway through the exhaust gas pipe. Thus, the device is highly durable even under severe use environments and is highly efficient in terms of purifying performance, and further, is effective against adverse heat effects and emission noise. |
