PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always, automatically control image quality with a high accuracy, with respect to a factor in a change in the image quality such as a mechanical error, an environmental change, a secular deterioration and exchange of parts, without troubling a user or a serviceman. SOLUTION: When the number of controlled variables as the factors in the image quality of a controlled system is defined as N, on a banner sheet B, (for instance, when the number of the controlled variables is two of solid and highlight densities, N=2), at the time of outputting the banner sheet, a reference pattern is formed, while each set value of N kinds of manipulated variables (for instance, two manipulated variables of the grid voltage G (G1-G3) of a scorotron electrifier and laser power LP (LP1-LP3) is switched in N+1 ways. The on-line reading of the reference pattern on the banner sheet B is executed by an optical sensor and a control rule for controlling the image quality is learned from the read value and the set value of the manipulated variable at the time of outputting the banner sheet B. Then, the optimum value of the manipulated variable is inferred according to the control rule, to control the image quality. |
