PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject glycol having a narrow molecular weight distribu tion industrially advantageously from a cyclic ether by using a solid acid cata lyst having active sites substantially only at the outer surface thereof. SOLUTION: The method for producing a polyoxyalkylene glycol is constituted by using a solid acid catalyst having active sites in a range of <=200μm, suitably <=100μm from the outer surface of the catalyst particles in a ring open polymerization of a cyclic ether (suitably tetrahydrofuran). Further, it is preferable to convert the terminal of the obtained polymer to hydroxyl group after performing the ring opening polymerization in the presence of an acid anhydride, and in order to prepare the above catalyst, e.g. a solid acid catalytic material such as a superstrong acid obtained by loading sulfuric acid radical on a bleaching clay or zirconia, is impregnated preferably with a solution containing an active component necessary for forming active sites such as a metal such as Zr.
