PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing pearlescent paper excellent in design and printing suitability and useful for a poster, a calendar, etc., by forming a pearlescent pigment-coating layer only on the convex pattern part of a base paper having a relief pattern under a specific condition. SOLUTION: A pearlescent pigment-coating layer 2 is formed on a base paper 1 having a relief pattern formed by a parallel lines and/or curves having 5-100μm center line average height prescribed by JIS B 0610, by a roll coater having a gravure roll. Further, a transcription pressure of a backing roll of the roll coater is regulated to 0.5-5kg/cm<2> and the clearance between the gravure roll and the backing roll is regulated to 1.0-1.1 times of the thickness of the base paper 1. Moreover, the pearlescent pigment-coating layer 2 is formed only on the convex part of the relief pattern of the base paper 1 and the area occupied by the pearlescent pigment-coating layer 2 is regulated to be 5-50% of the raw paper 1.
