PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a phenylazonaphthalene in improved yields by diazotizing a specified aniline with neopentyl glycol dinitrite and coupling the product withβ-naphthol in the presence of an amine. SOLUTION: 1mol of an aniline represented by formula II (wherein R is H or a 1-4C alkyl) is diazotized with 0.5-0.56mol of neopentyl glycol dinitrite in an aqueous medium to obtain a reaction mixture. This mixture is coupled with 1.0-1.15mol, per mol of the aniline,β-naphthol at 5-50 deg.C in the presence of an ethanolamine- or propanolamine-type tert. amine in a mixed solvent containing 30-50wt.% water and 45-70wt.% water-miscible diluent to obtain a phenylazonaphthalene represented by formula I (wherein Kat<+> is the equivalent weight of a cation derived from the ethanolamine- or propanolamine-type tert. amine).
