LIQUID CRYSTAL CELL AND ITS ORIENTATION TREATMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal cell constituted to aver the extension of the orientation defect of smectic liquid crystals generated near a seal to a display region by devising the orientation treatment to the inside surfaces of both electrode substrates and an orientation treatment method for the same. SOLUTION: The inside surface 10A the electrode substrate 10 is subjected to the rubbing treatment in such a manner that the rubbing direction P1 of the inside surface part R1 of the electrode substrate 10 and the rubbing direction Q1 of the inside surface part R4 of the electrode substrate 20 intersect orthogonally with the rubbing direction P2 of both inside surface parts R2, R3 of the electrode substrate 10 and the rubbing direction Q2 of both inside surface parts R5, R6 of the electrode substrate 20. The inside surface of the electrode substrates countering the electrode substrate 10 are similarly varied in the rubbing directions.
