A main spot by a man lobe and a leading spot by a side lobe are formed on a recording layer 7, and the recording layer is irradiated with the leading spot prior to the main spot. An overwrite area is irradiated with the leading spot, and a reflected light from the overwrite area is received by a light-receiving device 9. Thus, whether an existing mark exists in the overwrite area or not is detected, and on the basis of the result of detection, the quantity of light of the main spot is adjusted in accordance with the contents of information to be written and the state of the overwrite area. |
