PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polarizing element which can be easily produced and is excellent in performance by forming a polarizing layer which contains lots of ferromagnetic particles having dimensional anlsotropy oriented in a dielectric material on at least one principal surface of a light-transmissible dielectric substrate. SOLUTION: This polarizing element is produced by depositing one or more dielectric layers on one or both principal planes of a dielectric substrate comprising light-transmitting glass. The dielectric layers (comprising ferromagnetic particle layers 2(n) and dielectric layers 3(n), wherein (n) is a natural number) contain iron oxide and ferromagnetic particles having dimensional anisotropy dispersed in a dielectric material. These multilayered structure of dielectric layers constitutes a polarizing layer H. By depositing dielectric layers on ferromagnetic particles, the ferromagnetic particles are dispersed in the dielectric material. As for the ferromagnetic particles, for example, chromium oxide or CoγFeO3 alloy are preferably used, and especially the preferable aspect ratio of Co-γFeO3 is 15 to 100.
