PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce friction on the surface of a magnetic recording medium, and improve running durability thereof, by forming a carbon protection film including nitrogen in the rate of 10 to 60 atom % on a metal magnetic thin film formed on a non-magnetic supporting material. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is formed by sequentially laminating a metal magnetic thin film 2, a carbon protection film 3 and a top coat layer 4 on the main surface 1a of a non-magnetic supporting material 1. As the non-magnetic supporting material 1, a polymer film such as of polyethylene terephthalate which is used in general in the magnetic recording medium of this type and the metal magnetic thin film 2 may be formed with Co, Co-Ni, Co-Cr or with oxide of these elements by the ordinary vacuum thin film forming means such as sputtering, CVD method, vacuum evaporation method and ion plating method, etc. |
