Process for joining a workpiece which can be plasticised to another workpiece

Two metallic workpieces are joined into a compound by placing a first workpiece against a base workpiece in the area of a joint and by pressing a friction element against the first workpiece while moving it relative to the workpieces towards the area of the joint. The friction element permeates into the first workpiece, forming a melt, the melt enters the area of the joint and is then withdrawn from the compound. The workpieces are thus friction welded in the area of the joint.
