PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-capacity storage battery having small self-discharge, and excellent in a preservation characteristic, by giving a specific material characteristic to a separator, in this storage battery wherein a given positive electrode and a negative electrode plates are partitioned respectively, by the separator composed of a porous polyolefine film. SOLUTION: In this battery wherein a positive electrode composed of metallic oxide (e.g. positive electrode having the active material) as nickel hydroxide, and a negative electrode plate having a main constitution material as transition metal (e.g. negative electrode composed of hydrogen storage alloy), are separated by the separator composed of a porous polyolefine film, preferably having a thickness of 10-120μ; an non exchange capacity is given to the separator, and the ion exchange capacity is made 0.02-3mm equivalent/g to the unit weight of the separator, in the ion exchange quantity of K. An ion exchange group for giving the ion exchange capacity can be cited as a sulfone group, a CCOH group, and an OH group, and the sulfone group is preferable.
