Method for manufacture of composite beams from timber strands

The method involves timber strands of length between 100 and 400 mm running in the direction of the timber fibres, widths of up to 60 mm, thicknesses from 1 to 6 mm and a moisture content natural or achieved of about 2 percent by mass. Adhesive e.g. urea resin is applied to the strands using normal OSB technology at a rate of between 1:10 to 1:30 adhesive to timber by mass. The strands are arranged to overlap one another in mats within the beam depth. The pre-warmed mats are compressed in the heated plates of a press to form the composite beam.
