The lintel made of bricks is used in a brick building. The bricks (1) are stood vertically on and spacing pieces (5) are inserted to ensure correct and even spacing between the bricks. Flat centering (9) on temporary supports is put up to hold the bricks in position while the end supports for the lintel are fitted. The lintel supports consist of angle-irons (2) with one leg resting on the bricks at the side of the aperture and the other butted against the end of the lintel. A rod (6) passes through bores in the bricks of the lintel near their lower ends and is tightened by nuts (7). A modified version of the system may produce a shallow arch. Gently tapered spacers with the large end upward are used. When the nuts are tightened to compress the bricks together, the lintel adopts an arcuate shape.
