Manufacture of externally toothed gear

A gear blank (20) is mounted on a rotating spindle (30) and a circular form tool (11) with an inner toothed edge (12) is positioned coaxially around it and rotated. A pressure roller moves the form tool to the blank to cut the teeth. The form tool is driven independently of the blank so that its speed may be varied. The number of teeth cut on the blank depends on the ratio of the speed of rotation of the form tool to that of the blank. The form tool and its drive mechanism (14) make up a deformation unit (10) which is mounted on a pivoting carrier arm (13). The carrier arm is moved by the pressure roller which moves along a track in the centre of the form tool.
