An assembly processes refuse, at least some of which may be composted. The refuse is pre-sorted into silos (10a -10c) classified (A) from industrial and hard bulky items, (B) bio-degradable domestic refuse, and (C) vegetable matter. The lower output (18) from the selection assembly supplies material to a bio-reactor vessel (20), while the overflow (26) is linked to a composting line (38) supplying a stratified compost heap (40). The selection assembly is preceded by a common dosing bunker. A mixer pump is placed before the bio-reactor vessel, which is connected to a gas membrane. A de-watering pump is positioned after the bio-reactor.
