Prodn. of vaccines against viral or bacterial antigens or epitopes comprises (1) binding partially oxidised polysaccharides (A) to the surface of bacteria; (2) coating the modified bacteria with viral or bacterial proteins and polypeptides (B), then (3) opt. combining the resulting suspension with additives. Also claimed are; (i) vaccines contg. bacteria to which first (A) and then (B) have been attached; and (ii) these bacteria ("directed bacteria") themselves. (A) are esp. from dextran, but may also be from starch, glucomannan, pectin, cellulose, chitosan or lipo-polysaccharides. The bacteria are Mycobacteria (esp. BCG strain) or Bordeletla pertussis. USE/ADVANTAGE - These vaccines provide stronger humoral and cellular immune responses compared with use of weakly immunogenic (B) along. The vaccines are useful in human or veterinary medicine, or in the pharmaceutical industry. They require no adjuvant.
|
