The present invention is concerned with a process for removing mercury and mercury-containing compounds from smelter and roaster gases. Selenium is injected in the gases under oxidizing conditions, the gases being maintained at a temperature sufficiently high to volatilize the selenium. The gases are then contacted with a reductive aqueous solution to form a suspension of nascent metallic selenium in the solution which reacts with the mercury and mercury-containing compounds in suspension or dissolved in the solution, to form HgSe that can be safely disposed of in tailing ponds.
|
