<p>Method and apparatus for fabricating a one-piece can body, with profiled closed end, from electrolytically metal plated, flat rolled steel. An axially-recessed bead (74) is formed in the endwall of a drawn cup by pulling sidewall metal for movement into such endwall. A bodymaker redraw of the cup positions sheet metal of the bead to form a closed end angled portion (84) extending from a circular configuration base support toward the sidewall. Following sidewall ironing a substantially-planar endwall panel (85), radially inward of the base support (86), is formed into a concave dome (88) by moving sidewall metal into the closed end of the body, thus substantially avoiding thinning of the closed end sheet material.</p> |
