The method involves using an encoder which has two circular tracks (2,3) with several magnetic segments, in which the outer track has one more segment than the inner. A sensor is mounted opposite each track, but displaced by 90 degrees, so that a sine and cosine signal is generated, corresponding to the two sensor positions. The phase difference in the two signals can be used to determine the absolute angular position. If a negative value of the difference is obtained the signal is increased by a value corresponding to one full revolution. A fine resolution of position within each segment is obtained by multiplying the value of the phase difference by the phase of a signal generator signal.
