The inner edges of the vanes, which lie inside the rotor, form pressure areas inside the rotor. These areas are pressurised via a compensating channel (32). This compensating channel is located in one side of the housing and is so arranged that the pressurised areas under the vanes are under intermediate pressure when the vanes pass through the stage in which their direction of travel is reversed. The amount of intermediate pressure is dependent on the system pressure. The pressure is controlled by a slide valve (35) which is integral with the housing. The slide valve maintains a constant pressure ratio between the system pressure and the intermediate pressure.
