For rooms with excess heat, in particular large-scale kitchens, known devices for aerating and deaerating are two bulky, so that it is not possible to accommodate them above an extractor hood. Various components, such as fan, the heat exchanger and other parts, are fixedly installed and can be reached only with difficulty for cleaning purposes. The new device is to be constructed, as a unit with fixed overall dimensions, compactly and with such a flatness that it can be installed without any problems above an extractor hood. Provided in a housing which is substantially smooth on the outside and is adapted in its overall dimensions to the space conditions existing above extractor hoods, in particular in large-scale kitchens, is a flat heat exchanger, below which a flat bypass duct runs. The heat exchanger and the bypass duct are separated from one another in their central region by means of a plate. The heat exchanger is removably mounted in the housing. A bottom panel of the bypass duct is designed as a fat and condensate trough. The device can be installed above the space remaining above extractor hoods or even combined with an extractor hood to form a structural unit.
