A breather valve (10) especially for a vehicle fuel tank has an upper section (12), above the filter, with a hood-like expansion chamber (16) open at the top to a connector (14) and tube. The base (22) part of the breather valve is an almost mirror image of the top, with an expansion chamber (26) under the filter. The two halves are joined to each other at a gas-tight seal (40) with a woven filter (30) allowing the passage of gas but preventing the passage of liquid. The filter covers most of the cross-section of the expansion chambers.
