An apparatus for determining the position of a work implement 102 such as the blade 129 of a motor grader 104 in a site coordinate system is provided. The position of the work implement 102 is defined as the position in the site coordinate of two fixed points located on the work implement 102. The apparatus includes first and second position sensors 128,130 mounted on the work implement 102. Each position sensor 128,130 determines its position via a GPS system 116, or a laser system 108, and produces a position signal. Other sensors mounted on the implement 102 measure the pitch, cross slope and rotation of the work implement 102 and produce respective signals. From the signals, a control base 118 determines the position of the work implement 102 in the site coordinate system as a function of the first and second position signals and the pitch signal if the first and second position signals are valid, or as a function of one of the position signals, the pitch signal, the cross slope signal and the rotation signal, if the other of the position signal is invalid.
