The apparatus comprises a head-mounted image display 1, a walk surface mechanism 3 comprising a pair of freely movable walk-plates 6, and a controller 4. As the participant M walks, sensors 11 on walk-plates 6 detect the position of signal transmitters 10 on shoes 9 worn by the participant M, and a driver 8 moves the walk-plates 6 to a corresponding position to cause the foot bottom to be contacted on the walk-plate 6 and keep the participant's trunk in a fixed position. In other forms of walk surface mechanisms 3 disclosed (figs 6-8 and 21-23), the walk-plates 6 may be individually slanted or raised and lowered to simulate walking on slopes or on steps respectively. Also disclosed is an image which may be generated by mixing a previously programmed image with one taken by a camera (37, fig 9) which is movable in a miniature space (36) and imitates a view of the participant M.
