Removing coatings from thermoplastic substrates

Thermoplastic substrates are salvaged from discarded thermoplastic substrates which have been treated with a decorative or protective coating by treating in a coating removal solution comprising water, alkaline material and surfactant at about 60{C to about 100{C with agitation at a pH of about 10 to 14, removing the treated thermoplastic substrate from the coating removal solution and rinsing with a first aqueous solution followed by a dilute acidic aqueous rinse solution and followed with a second aqueous rinse solution until the pH of the resulting runoff solution is neutral and drying the resulting rinsed thermoplastic substrate. Discarded thermoplastic articles which may be treated include compact discs, lenses or reflectors.
