A computer workstation is attached to a network such as the Internet. Browser software 210 running on the workstation can access and retrieve pages of data from over the network, which are displayed at the workstation. A page can include an APPLET tag referencing code which the browser can also retrieve for execution on the workstation. The tag has associated with it attributes which reference another file, in a database 250 accessible over the network, which contains information about the code, such as its size, resource requirements or licensing terms. The browser accesses this information, before or when retrieving the code, to determine automatically, or to help a user to determine, whether or not to retrieve or run the code.
