PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ink jet printer in which the capping state can be sustained even when an ink jet head is shifted manually to the outside of a print region. SOLUTION: The ink jet printer comprises a carriage 12, an ink jet head 11 mounted on the carriage 12 and shifted relatively thereto between a printable position and a retracting position, means for urging the ink jet head 11 toward the retracting position while being mounted on the carriage 12, means for resisting against the urging force of the urging means to set the ink jet head 11 at the printable position at the time of printing while being mounted on the carriage 12, and a cap 13 covering an orifice face 11a when the ink jet head 11 is set at the retracting position while being mounted on the carriage 12. Since the ink jet head 11 is set at the retracting position by the urging force of the urging means at the time of nonprinting, the orifice is not exposed. |
