PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol having excellent productivity and industrial practicality by improving durability of a copper-chromium catalyst. SOLUTION: The objective 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol is produced by adopting a fixed bed continuous reaction, subjecting a dialkyl terephthalate to unclear hydrogenation in the presence of a ruthenium-carried formed catalyst to obtain a dialkyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate and subjecting the resultant dialkyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate to hydrogenation in the presence of a copper- chromium formed catalyst. In the case, a copper-chromium formed catalyst having 10-20m<2> /g specific surface area is adopted as the copper-chromium formed catalyst. Preferably, dimethyl terephthalate is used as the dialkyl terephthalate. |
