PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound capable of utilizing as an intermediate for medicines, especially an intermediate for renin inhibitor, etc., in good yield without accompanying recemization by carrying out catalytic reduction of aromatic amino acids by using a ruthenium-based catalyst in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: (A) An aromatic amino acid (derivative) of formula II (R<2> is a 6-15C aryl which may have a substituent group or a 7-15C aralkyl which may have a substituent group) is subjected to hydrogenation reaction in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst to provide the objective amino acid (derivative) of formula I (R<1> is a cyclohexyl which may be substituted or a 7-15C cyclohexylalkyl which may be substituted; P<1> and P<2> are each independently H, an amino-protecting group, etc.; P<3> is H or a carboxyl-protecting group; *is an optically active carbon atom). A ruthenium carbon catalyst in an amount of 1-10% is used in 0.001-0.1 equivalent based on amino acids of raw material as the ruthenium catalyst and the reaction is preferably carried out under 1-100 hydrogen pressure. Thereby, the objective compound can be produced by an industrially useful method. |
