PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for producing an olefin polymer, capable of preventing the produced polymer from attaching to wall face of a reactor and having high bulk density and good particle shape of the resultant polymer and provide a method for producing the olefin polymer by using the catalyst. SOLUTION: A monomer such as propylene is preliminarily polymerized in a liquid low-boiling point hydrocarbon such as pentane by using a catalyst component comprising a group IVB transition metal chelate of the periodic table having a substituted cyclopentadienyl group, etc., and an aluminum oxy compound to provide the objective catalyst forα-olefin polymerization. Then, anα-olefin is brought into contact with the catalyst and theα-olefin is polymerized to produce the objectiveα-olefin polymer.
