PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for ethylene polymerization, capable of providing a polymer having sufficiently high polymerization activity and high molecular weight and excellent in powder properties by simultaneously supporting zirconocene, etc., and titanocene on an ion exchangeable layered compound. SOLUTION: This catalyst comprises a product obtained by bringing (A) a metallocene-based transition metal compound containing zirconium or hafnium into contact with (B) a metallocene-based transition metal compound, (C) an ion-exchangeable layered compound or a non layered structural inorganic silicic acid salt and (D) an organoaluminum compound. Furthermore,α-olefin polymer obtained by preliminarily polymerizingα-olefin in the presence of (E) a contact product of the components A to D is preferably included in an amount of 0.01-1,000g based on 1g component C.
