A refining element for a refiner with opposed counter-rotating refining surfaces separated by a refining gap (15) comprises bars (20) and intermediate grooves which extend over the entire refining element. The bars (20) form an angle of 50 to 55 degree with the radius of the refining surface, which angle decreases outwardly along the surface to -25 to +25 and the bar separation in the inlet portion is greater than in the outlet portion.
