PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain highly luminant a large screen with a small-sized projection type image display device in which the special countermeasure of heat-treatment is unnecessitated, by reflecting or transmitting only the polarized light of a projection light in a specific direction and providing a polarizing screen visualizing an image in accordance with an image signal to suppress the degration of the member of a polarizing plate and the lowering of a display characteristic. SOLUTION: A light beam emitted from a light source 11 is converted into, for example, a (p) wave by a polarization transducer 12. This (p) wave is radiated on a transmission type liquid crystal display element (TFT-LCD) 13 having no polarizing plate. The TFT-LCD 13 performs the optical modulation of the polarized light in accordance with an image signal to be impressed on the TFT-CLD 13. That is, it performs the rotation control of the polarized light according to the image signal to change a part of the light into an (s) wave according to the image signal. An image light applied with the rotation controll of the plane of polarization in this manner is expandingly projected on a polarizing screen 15 by a projection lens 14. The polarizing screen 15 absorbs only a light having the polarization component in one direction and selectively reflects only a light having the polarization component in the other direction. |
