PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent orientation defects or faults in functions of the device constitution due to difference in the surface levels of a substrate and to obtain high-quality image display characteristics with uniform orientation of a liquid crystal by forming a flattening layer which contains a specified acryl polymer component having a repeating unit on a color filter. SOLUTION: At least color filters 5a to 5c and a flattening layer 7 on the color filters 5a to 5c are formed between one substrate and a transparent electrode 2a, 2b, and the flattening layer 7 contains an acryl polymer component having the repeating unit expressed by formula. In the formula, R is H or CH3 . Since a resin compsn. containing the acryl polymer component having the repeating unit expressed by the formula is used for flattening treatment of the substrates 1a, 1b having the structure above described, difference in the surface levels due to recesses between pixels and difference in the film thickness of the color filters 5a, 5c are largely corrected. Therefore, even when transparent electrodes 2a, 2b and orientation controlling films 3a, 3b are formed on the pixels, the substrate surface can be maintained almost flat. |
