Scissors links(5,6), with a common pivot(4) fixed to a support frame(3), have lower ends fitted with rounded jaw-pieces(7,8) and upper ends pivoted(11,12) to two links(9,10) having a common upper pivot(13) on a crane-hook attachment(14,15). A pivoted(17) latch(16), acting(16c) on the upper pivot, keeps the jaws open. The operator lowers them over the hemispherical head(1) of a lifting stub(2), fitted to the load. An inverted funnel(21) provides centralising guidance. The operator then deenergises, remotely, a solenoid(19,20) supporting a weighted arm(18), on the latch. This weight swings the latch, freeing the linkages. As lifting begins, the jaws first close beneath the stub head, while the latch notch(16a) receives the pivot, securing the linkages.
