PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a good switching characteristic and good uniform orientation by preventing the coloration by the movement of liquid crystal molecules when chiral smectic liquid crystals are used. SOLUTION: Monomolecular film accumulative oriented films obtd. by accumulating the monomolecular films formed by dropping monomolecular film materials onto a flowing water surface are used as the oriented films to orient the liquid crystal molecules. The monomolecular films are so accumulated that the flowing water directions at the time of forming the respective monomolecular films of the uppermost layer of the monomolecular film accumulative oriented films and the layer right thereunder are reversed. The monomolecular films are so formed that the flowing water directions at the time of forming the monomolecular films of the respective uppermost layers of the upper and lower substrates are approximately paralleled or approximately counterparalleled. |
