A compound of formula (I) wherein each of R and R1, which are the same or different, is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, trifluoromethyl, cyano, nitro, phenyl, benzyl, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 alkoxy, C1-C6 alkylthio, SOR6, SO2R6, SO2NH2, formyl, C2-C6 alkanoyl, carboxy, C1-C6 alkoxycarbonyl or a -N(R7R8) group in which each of R7 and R8 independently is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, formyl or C2-C6 alkanoyl; R2 is hydroxy, C1-C6 alkoxy, -N(R9R10) in which each of R9 and R10, which are the same or different, is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl or phenyl or NHOR11 wherein R11 is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, benzyl or phenyl; each of R3, R4 and R6, which are the same or different is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, benzyl or phenyl; and R5 is hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl, benzyl, C2-C6 alkanoyl, C2-C4 alkenyl, C2-C4 alkynyl or formyl; and ---- represents a double or single bond; or a pharmaceutically or veterinarily acceptable salt thereof. The compound of formula (I) and the pharmaceutically and veterinarily acceptable salts thereof are useful for the prevention and/or treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
