A bicycle is provided with a shock absorbing arrangement for the rear wheel, the arrangement including resiliently loaded chain stays 22 having their front ends fixed to a hollow shaft 11 revolvably mounted inside the barrel-like bottom bracket 10 of the bicycle. The hollow shaft receives the bottom bracket bearing axle of the pedal cranks and chain wheel. Rings 11 are welded to the opposite ends of the hollow shaft 11 so as to prevent it from moving axially relative to the bottom bracket. In an alternative construction the outer surface of the shaft has two annular grooves (19, Fig. 6) in which the inner ends of locating screws 16 held by lock nuts 17 are received. Additional groove (18, 18a) are located between the grooves (19) and in communication with an oil feed nozzle 14. The resilient loading of the chain stays 22 is provided by a spring (31, Fig. 4) coupled to the front ends of seat stays (30). |
